I managed to do another trip to San Juan Island back in October 2018 and again in June 2019. Will share the photos from 2019 later, but I did a revised version of the original footage. Tried to make it less shaky.
Yeah, I can now say I have been to the American Camp / South Beach area on San Juan Island on 3 different occasions (with the most recent one being in June 2019), and I have seen the foxes there on all 3 occasions. Elsewhere on the island (i.e. Roche Harbor, Friday Harbor, English Camp, etc), foxes are more hit and miss and harder to spot. However, if you visit the American Camp / South Beach area (where you get the tall grassy fields), you stand a good chance of encountering the foxes. It is recommended you take binoculars as it is easier to spot them that way. I can't promise sightings every time, but if you spend a day there and hike around on the trails there, the foxes are likely to show up sooner or later. They come in at least 2 varieties too: traditional red foxes and silver foxes.
Few tips from experience to improve your chances of seeing foxes on San Juan Island:
- be sure to visit the South Beach and American Camp area. While you might encounter foxes elsewhere on the island, judging from personal exprience, you are most likely to see them in the American camp area
- Try to go either early in the morning or late in the day (especially on a sunny day)
- Bring binoculars and a digital camera. If you scan the field with binoculars, you are likely to see some foxes wandering around. Note that the area is also good place to watch for whales, deer, rabbits, and eagles. On a sunny day, the area offers good views of the Olympic Penninsula and Vancouver Island in the distance.
- The area along Pickett Lane where it is fenced is often a hot spot for sightings (at least in the field), sometimes I will see them there.
- The trails leading from the beach to the fort can have foxes lurking along them and sometimes they do get close to the trails.
- If you have night vision monoculars, this can be a good place to go at night and get them on night vision.
